Creating a rustic wedding theme is all about using natural touches and foraged items rather than purchasing luxurious and refined items. A rustic wedding theme or style is a theme which is inspired by the simplicity of country life, references the outdoors and usually incorporates rustic elements such as timber, metal and raw surfaces. Here’s your guide to creating a rustic themed wedding for the modern bride.

The rise in popularity of rustic weddings has also seen the rise in more natural wedding invitations and stationery. Invitations that suit the quintessential rustic wedding include invitations made of wood, simple letterpress invitations or you can use a paper stock which has a rough or unfinished edge. Now, when it comes to wedding signage you simply can’t go past the natural tones of timber matched with white calligraphy, gorgeous!

Immerse yourself and your guests amongst the beautiful natural surrounds, just think parks, gardens or even a secluded spot in a paddock. When it comes to choosing your ceremony furniture, opt for natural timber toned chairs rather than bright whites and smooth finishes. The timber tones will blend into the surrounds and look effortlessly styled which is the key to a rustic themed wedding.

The key here is to bring the outside in. Native Australian florals always work well when you are trying to achieve a rustic wedding theme. Eucalyptus, gum, protea’s, wattle and olive branches are our top picks with greenery and florals when it comes to a rustic themed wedding. When you brief your florist on what flowers you are after make sure you use the words unstructured, cascading and effortless. Your bouquet should look like it has just been effortlessly picked from the garden rather than being styled to the tenth degree.

IT’S TIME TO TALK FASHION

This is where you can really have some fun with mixing different textured fabrics to create that rustic and slightly unfinished style. For bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits we’d suggest using fabrics such as linen, tweed or even cotton. The natural fibres of these fabrics ooze that rustic vibe and look effortlessly chic. For the bride, lace is essential to add that rustic touch to your outfit, the bigger the lace the better in our books. Just be warned that small and intricate lace can give you a vintage look which might not be your thing. Last but not least — the groom. Groom’s, be brave with colour when it comes to your get-up, try suits in a blue tone rather than something black or grey as this will look to formal.
